Less Veiled Faces after a Year of COVID-19

Dear Fellow Christian,

Perhaps one of the new things occurring in this time is that God is making us more easily seen for who and how we are. Our most outer layers, the social facades we’ve gotten used to wearing, at work or school, at church, events, and so on are now less fed by use. Thinning and becoming more transparent, perhaps they are falling off like spent leaves.

Even as we have become more pressured to be more vulnerable to tyrannical forces from without, perhaps the forces inside us are more easily showing through. Maybe we’re more clearly demonstrating, or “manifesting” the attributes of our Holy Spirit, or, at times, the demonic — and if that is true, then of course it’s a time we might feel a need for masks.

Always, especially if all this is the case, let us each be sure to look straight to Jesus, one on one, more and more. Then, as it happens, we will look more like our Lord and more like the true and unique selves He has so masterfully made and continues to fashion. And so, may this be true of each of us:

“Whenever a person turns to the Lord, the veil is removed. Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Lord’s Spirit is, there is freedom. As all of us reflect the glory of the Lord with unveiled faces, we are becoming more like him with ever-increasing glory by the Lord’s Spirit.”

II Corinthians 3:16-18 (ISV)
