On Sunday, June 9th, 2002, the Harlem/Washington Heights Friends of the People’s Weekly World heardBlair Bertaccini, a trade unionist, Latin America scholar and solidarity activist, who recently returned from attending the Congress of the Venezuelan Communist Party.

Bertaccini gave a comprehensive picture of the “exciting political process in Venezuela”. He emphasized the need for the U.S. people to put an end to the Bush administration policies in support of the Venezuelan oligarchy. Such policies, they said, are designed to “undermine and destroy the democratic process in Venezuela.”

Bertaccini was hosted by the Venezuelan Communist Party.

Powered by the grassroots efforts of union members who made phone calls, knocked on doors, talked to their co-workers and attended Get Out The Vote events, labor-endorsed candidates swept to victory in the 2008 election.

Bertaccini was one of the many communist phone bankers who helped win Connecticut for Barack Obama and to elect far left Senator Chris Murphy.

“This was a victory for the middle class,” said Council 4 Executive Director Sal Luciano, colleague of Bertaccini’s and a Communist Party affiliate. “Our members refused to allow corporations and right-wing billionaires to buy the election and ram through their extremist, anti-worker agenda. I am proud and grateful for everyone’s effort.”

Despite being a communist and working for the Democrats, Bertaccini has also been a long time member of the far left Working Families Party.

Blair Bertaccini was a 2014 Working Families Party candidate for District 15 of the Connecticut State Senate. He ran unsuccessfully for the same seat in 2012.
