Ted Cruz Defends

“We should shrink the size and power of the federal government by every and any means possible. What does that mean? That means eliminating unnecessary or unconstitutional agencies.” -Ted Cruz

“There’s a point at which: Let’s get to be a little establishment. We’ve got to get things done folks, OK? Believe me, don’t worry. We’re going to make such great deals.” -Donald J. Trump

Watch this short video from CNN posted on January 25:

The initial Cruz/Trump partnership was exhilarating to many, as it signaled to conservatives that anti-establishment candidates would stand on their own merit instead of resorting to the tiresome attacks that have defined presidential campaigns in America. Instead of childish infighting, conservatives hoped, anti-establishment candidates would work together to reaffirm the importance of the Constitution and finally expose the socialists that have taken over the Democrat party.

The impulse to attack, however, was evidently too strong.

In the wake of the painful vitriol, many have reluctantly reflected on the man behind the bluster. Those (including this author) who shouted with glee that Donald J. Trump is not about to bullied by the establishment were forced to actually look at Trump, the man.

Doug Ross, for example, came up with a stunning list of Trump’s donations and policy positions that would make any thinking conservative cringe.

To add to Ross’s comprehensive list, the author found a few additional items of concern:

Flashback: Trump gave maximum contribution allowed to Carter re-election bid

Donald Trump, along with his entire family (“his parents, sister and brother “) all gave the maximum allowed donation to Jimmy Carter’s re-election campaign. Was it genuine concern for America that made the Trump family pour as much money as possible into Jimmy Carter’s re-election campaign? Or, was it self-interest?

A little-discussed fact from the Wall Street Journal in September:

“One month after Mr. Reagan announced his candidacy on Nov. 13, 1979, Mr. Trump, his parents, sister and brother each made the maximum federal campaign contribution allowed—but not to Mr. Reagan. The Trumps all gave to the re-election campaign of Democratic President Jimmy Carter, according to Federal Election Commission records.”

The GOP establishment chooses Trump over Cruz

While the grassroots chose Trump, Cruz and Carson specifically because they are perceived to be anti-establishment, the establishment has chosen Trump, albeit reluctantly. The consensus seems to be that Trump will compromise while Cruz is inflexible on that pesky Constitution.

It is clear that the establishment is leaning toward Trump (see here and here).

From Erick Erickson:

  • “Former Senator Bob Dole, who ran against Ronald Reagan declaring Reagan would be the death of the GOP, has declared he would rather have Donald Trump than Ted Cruz while endorsing Jeb Bush.
  • Former Senator Trent Lott, who has regularly attacked the tea party and conservative activists, has declared that Trump is preferable to Ted Cruz.
  • Iowa Governor Terry Branstad, whose son is an ethanol lobbyist, has declared Cruz must be defeated at all costs.
  • Lobbyists on K Street are savaging Cruz and declaring Trump to be preferable.
  • The Washington political establishment would prefer Donald Trump to Ted Cruz because they see Donald Trump is more likely to preserve their access to power and status quo…”

Republican presidential candidate Donald J. Trump, who thankfully re-taught America that it is okay to be politically incorrect, who challenges the mainstream media loudly, and who dragged illegal immigration back to the forefront where it deserves to be, has overall been a net positive for conservatives. However, his erratic behavior in his quest to win at all costs surely foreshadows what a Trump presidency would look like.

The only way America can be properly restored is by returning to her Constitutional roots. The founding fathers’ vision of self rule and limited government must be realized before America becomes a shell of her former self. Ted Cruz, who has vowed to work with Congress to drastically cut government, is best equipped to work to this end, if it is not already too late.

Comments

  1. Cruz is not eligible and is a severe risk if he even gets the nomination. Cruz is done. It’s time to look towards the the general election. Nationalism “trumps” intellectual conservatism.
