Wednesday evening at 9 pm Eastern time, the Dave Levine Show interviewed former Border Patrol agent Zachary Taylor. This is the agent featured in an article on these pages in late July. Levine cited an article on Drudge Report today titled “Border Agent: ‘Morale Is At an All-Time Low Right Now.’ The article cites National Border Patrol Council Local 3307 Vice President Chris Cabrera, a former Border agent himself:

Teenage criminals and gang members from Central America have been using “a loophole” to stay in the country, border agent Chris Cabrera revealed. Under current policy, unaccompanied minors are allowed to stay in the country if they have family in the United States and say they have none in their home country, regardless of their background.

Even if he is a confirmed gang member, a confirmed criminal, even by self-admission, we for some reason don’t send them back to their home country — we release them into our country. Cabrera said.

Levine asked for Taylor’s opinion on the piece. He responded that the Border Patrol agent’s biggest enemy right now is the Department of Homeland Security. Border Patrol agents are essentially being told “You are expendable… You are collateral damage,” he said.

I called into the show to discuss some of the assertions Taylor made in his 15 minute video interview. Specifically I wanted to discuss ammo shortages among the Border Patrol on the Southwest border, the estimates of Africans coming across the border and the prospects for an outbreak of Ebola. Am afraid I kind of monopolized the show. My apologies to Dave, who was very diplomatic.

Taylor made the same observation about West Africans that I made in my piece on the prospects for an Ebola outbreak in the U.S. That is, essentially, that we know West Africans from Ebola-affected countries are crossing the border. The Border Patrol has apprehended 100 since the beginning of 2014. The initial count was 71, but a closer inspection of the CBP document reveals 100, and that doesn’t include the Nigerians. Regardless, how many have we missed? Also, if even one came across commingled with Central Americans, he could infect many of them before anyone knew. These in turn could threaten Americans.

  1. A great premise to seize even more executive powers.
