INVESTIGATION CONTINUES 5/2: Romney Accused of Felony, Election SUBterfuge in Wisconsin Primary

Nothing much, or a highly significant. “leading indicator?”

After all Republicans have joined with Democrats in doing, to protect Barack Obama from investigation, would it not be made to order for Mitt Romney to be disqualified from the presidency for this? – for what seemingly credible testimony indicates he said and did at Cousins Subs?

As I have been told, the crime alleged is a felony. Hope they were tasty sandwiches.

I also hope to get through to the Waukesha County District Attorney’s office today, to learn the status of their investigation. This is my home state, so it I feel a certain responsibility. It has been weeks now; time for an update; fast food, after all.

Waukesha Co. District Attorney investigating Romney sub incident

Posted on: 11:28 am, April 4, 2012, by Mike Lowe, updated on: 09:10pm, April 4, 2012

WAUKESHA — The Waukesha County District Attorney is investigating a complaint filed by the Democratic Party of Wisconsin. It alleges Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney violated election bribery law when he was involved in handing out free sub sandwiches at a Cousins Subs store in Waukesha Tuesday, during Wisconsin’s presidential primary election.

While handing out the sandwiches Tuesday afternoon, Romney said: “Get your friends to go vote. Get some friends to vote with you. That’s how you can legally vote multiple times. Bring your friends, and go vote, and if you want another sandwich, there are more back there.”

Meanwhile, Government Accountability Board spokesperson Reid Magney said in a statement released Wednesday: “We strongly discourage candidates and businesses from giving out free food, beverages or anything else of value (more than $1) to get people to vote, or to thank them for voting. Doing so puts them in jeopardy of violating the law. We believe people should vote because they care about the issues and the process, not because they might get free food or free beer. We give the same advice to Democrats as to Republicans.”

The Wisconsin Democratic Party filed a complaint Wednesday, April 4th with the GAB regarding Tuesday’s incident. “A sandwich in exchange for voting. This is a black and white issue. You are not allowed to offer someone more than $1 in exchange for their vote,” Wisconsin Democratic Party spokesman Mike Tate said Tuesday.

Update to come – along with it, maybe we should reiterate some of the missing ingredients in what has been served up for us with Barry Soetoro, a.k.a., Barack Obama.

This could amount to “a dish best served cold,” for some.

4/27, 3:03pm CT – I left a voice message with Brad Schimmel, District Attorney, Waukesha County, Wisconsin, asking for any updates, having seen none since April 4.

4/27, 3:22pm CT – For more details, we have this from The Atlantic, April 9th. It is the last article that comes up in a Google search for “Romney Cousins Subs”:

What’s the sandwich talking about? In case you somehow missed the scandal last week, on election day in Wisconsin Mitt Romney and Rep. Paul Ryan Ron Paul handed out free sandwiches at a Cousins Subs in Waukesha. Video footage of the event has the Republican presidential candidate telling the crowd, “bring your friends to the polling place. Get out and vote. And if you want another sandwich, there are more back there.”

Local Democrats weren’t amused. The research director of the Wisconsin Democrat party filed a complaint with the state Government Accountability Board arguing that the Romney campaign had violated state election law restrictions which prevent candidates from handing out things “of value,” as in greater than a dollar, as a means of inducing someone to either vote or stay home from the polls. The board said it discouraged the practice, saying that “we believe people should vote because they care about the issues and the process, not because they might get free food or free beer. We give the same advice to Democrats as to Republicans.” But the Romney campaign blew off the incident, dismissing the Democratic complaint “a laughable stunt.”

It was the Romney camp’s reaction, says Chaudhary, that really galled him. “We don’t think this is changing the outcome of the election,” he told me this week. “But it is a callous disregard for the small things. And when they are pointed out, for them to be like, ‘Who cares? It’s just a small thing. It didn’t matter.’ Well, you know what? This stuff matters to us, whether it’s needless voter ID restrictions or handing out sandwiches. All these little election laws, they’re there for a reason.”

And, as is perhaps naturally when it comes to an Obama campaign veteran, Chaudhary sees in sandwich-gate a sign that the Romney campaign isn’t all that it’s cracked up to be. “We hear a lot about how this campaign is so amazingly professionally run,” he said. “And they do [generally] do a good job. But, for instance, Governor Romney always seems to be confused at his press avails on whether he should be taking questions or not. I don’t think it’s his fault. It’s actually his staff’s fault. But it just sort of adds up to not caring about the way things work on the small level, on the local level, about how you’re talking to people when you’re talking to people.”

“And when you’re talking to them and violating the law,” he said, “that’s important.”

Again, here is the link to the complaint for election tampering, a Class 1 felony in Wisconsin with a mandatory $10,000 fine and/or prison penalty of 3.5 years:

4/27, ~3:30pm CT – These two videos, residing at YouTube, include such things as music and commentary, but the first shows Romney passing out sub sandwiches with Ryan and the second presents clear audio of Romney’s offer to voters.

4/27, 3:57pm CT – The following is a Scripture that has been on my own mind from time to time, these last few days. I’ve added emphasis (bold) to two specific statements therein.

Luke 16:1-14 [Edit: at biblegateway.com]

New International Version 1984 (NIV1984)

The Parable of the Shrewd Manager

1 Jesus told his disciples: “There was a rich man whose manager was accused of wasting his possessions. 2 So he called him in and asked him, ‘What is this I hear about you? Give an account of your management, because you cannot be manager any longer.’

3 “The manager said to himself, ‘What shall I do now? My master is taking away my job. I’m not strong enough to dig, and I’m ashamed to beg— 4 I know what I’ll do so that, when I lose my job here, people will welcome me into their houses.’

5 “So he called in each one of his master’s debtors. He asked the first, ‘How much do you owe my master?’

6 “‘Eight hundred gallons[a] of olive oil,’ he replied.

“The manager told him, ‘Take your bill, sit down quickly, and make it four hundred.’

7 “Then he asked the second, ‘And how much do you owe?’

“‘A thousand bushels[b] of wheat,’ he replied.

“He told him, ‘Take your bill and make it eight hundred.’

8 “The master commended the dishonest manager because he had acted shrewdly. For the people of this world are more shrewd in dealing with their own kind than are the people of the light. 9 I tell you, use worldly wealth to gain friends for yourselves, so that when it is gone, you will be welcomed into eternal dwellings.

10 “Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much, and whoever is dishonest with very little will also be dishonest with much. 11 So if you have not been trustworthy in handling worldly wealth, who will trust you with true riches? 12 And if you have not been trustworthy with someone else’s property, who will give you property of your own?

13 “No servant can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money.”

14 The Pharisees, who loved money, heard all this and were sneering at Jesus.

Footnotes:

  1. Luke 16:6 Greek one hundred batous (probably about 3 kiloliters)
  2. Luke 16:7 Greek one hundred korous (probably about 35 kiloliters)

Clearly, Gov. Romney has been disturbingly dishonest with much already:

How much more opportunity for dishonesty and betrayal of the public trust would there be, were he elected United States President?

How much more, if elected at perhaps our most critical hour, of economic collapse and worldwide subterfuge on an overwhelming scale, by very powerful ones very active in the globalist financial complex of which his Bain companies have been an ever increasing element?

4/27, 8:43pm CT – This news report from WXOW, Channel 19 in La Crosse, WI was related by a Facebook poster. I see not date, but it seems to be from later during the week of the Primary.

WAUKESHA (WKOW) — A spokesperson for Waukesha County District Attorney Brad Schimel told 27 News Schimel has launched an investigation into allegations that free sandwiches given out on election day by Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney violated Wisconsin law.

Waukesha County investigator detective David Witkowski told 27 News the criminal probe began Wednesday with interviews and requests for records.

On Tuesday, April 3, Romney and Wisconsin Congressman Paul Ryan greeted people at a Cousins Subs restaurant on Pearl Street. News video shows Romney encouraging people to vote and inviting them to pick up free sandwiches.

“A reasonable person would understand that Romney’s statement was an offer of a sandwich for individuals who were going to vote in the Republican primary, who had already voted in the Republican primary, and the sandwiches had been provided not by Cousins Subs,” wrote Melissa Baldauff of the Democratic Party of Wisconsin in a complaint field with the state Government Accountability Board.

Wisconsin law bars people from offering anything valued at more than $1 as an inducement to vote.

Cousins spokesperson Ashley Lawson told 27 News the restaurant did not cover the cost of the complimentary sandwiches, but said the restaurant entered into a catering contract to provide them. No information was provided as to who entered into the contract.

Brad Schimmel

Spokespersons for both the Romney and Ryan campaigns have yet to respond to requests for comment from 27 News.

5/2, 11:03pm CT – The Romney-Ryan vote tampering investigation by Brad Schimmel, Waukesha County District Attorney, is continuing, as he stated this morning by telephone. He relates he has been interviewing witnesses, has at least one more to go, and depending upon that interview, may have others. After this, he will make his determination, for any further action.
